don't say a word

I saw this on Slashdot: a guy named Dan Whatley is being sued for posting his opinions on a public forum! I'm highly disturbed. I, as an American citizen, feel violated and betrayed (not for the first time, of course). Freedom of Speech. Freedom of Press (everyone's a publisher on the web). Freedom of Assembly (it's a forum after all, isn't it?). Some people say I'm paranoid, but when I start seeing our rights being skinned down like an onion, I think I have good reason to be.

Watch what you say, kids.

(Also, there's the complication of the Internet being an international network; what would happen if companies started suing foreign slanderers? More international relations hocus pocus.)
